POKOTABI / Jūban
中華屋 十番
An introduction to Jūban in Higashi-Nakano, exploring its neighborhood Chinese fare from garlic-scented tanmen with chewy thick noodles to crisp gyoza, zhajiangmian, and sātē rice.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Located just down Higashi-Nakano's Ginza-dori shopping street, Jūban draws steady crowds day and night for its unpretentious neighborhood Chinese diner atmosphere. The main draw for many is the tanmen, featuring a salt-seasoned broth coaxed from simmering vegetables in the pan, accented by a gentle aroma of garlic. The natural sweetness of ingredients like Chinese cabbage, garlic chives, and bean sprouts melds into the soup, yielding a comforting, grease-free finish anchored by pleasantly firm, chewy thick noodles. Opting for the chashu tanmen tops the bowl with tender sliced pork, infusing meaty richness into the clean broth for a heartier meal.
Regularly ordered alongside the noodles, the gyoza stand out with their relatively thick skins seared crisp and fragrant on the surface. Inside, the dumplings are packed with finely minced vegetables and meat, gently seasoned to leave room for diners to tailor each bite with vinegar, rayu chili oil, and soy sauce. In addition to the pan-fried variety, smooth and slippery boiled dumplings are on offer. They pair nicely with rice as a set meal or as an accompaniment to a cold bottle of beer.
The lineup of noodles and rice specialties extends well beyond the classics. The zhajiangmian—firmly cooked noodles topped with sautéed vegetables and doused in piping-hot, aromatic miso-based soup—is well-loved for its robust flavors and generous toppings. Diners can also choose according to their mood, from dishes such as sātē rice, which stimulates the appetite with a sharp kick of spice and wok-tossed vegetables, to moist, flavorful fried rice.
Seating includes counter stools and tables, accommodating solo diners stopping in for a quick lunch as easily as groups gathering for dinner amid the lively hum of the fast-paced kitchen. Note that the shop does not accept reservations and operates on cash only, so having cash on hand before dropping by is recommended.
